Do Your Own Taxes for Free!

Through a partnership with MyFreeTaxes the Southern Tier CA$H program is offering eligible families who want to prepare their own return the chance to use helpful software and file their taxes for free

You would be able to file your federal tax return as well as up to 3 different state returns for free - if your total family income was under $64,000 in 2016.


Prepare your own return from your own home, at your convenience!


 What do I need?

  • Access to a computer and printer
  • A valid email address
  • Last year's federal and state returns  
  •  Social Security cards and birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents you are claiming
  •  A deposit slip with your savings or checking routing and account numbers


Then you will need to gather up all information for your Sources of income

·         W-2 forms for ALL jobs held in 2016

·         1099 forms, such as Unemployment, Social Security and Self-Employment

·         Record of cash payments received in 2016 for work not reported on W-2 forms or 1099 forms

·         Pension documents, including records of withdrawals from 401(k) or other pension plans

·         Documentation of cancellation of debt

·         Records of your contributions to Traditional and Roth IRAs, and Health Savings Accounts

·         Records showing any Estimated Tax payments made

·         All Health Insurance information and Affordable Care Act Forms including 1095 A,B and C. 


Next you would need information for possible deductions and credits

  •    If you paid for child care, bring documentation listing provider name, address, tax ID# and the amount you paid in 2016

    ·         If you, your spouse or a child attended college, bring your tuition expense statement (1098T), documentation of amount spent on books, supplies and equipment, and/or student loan interest statement (1098E)

    ·         Documentation for alimony and child support

    ·         Property taxes paid, and rental information for NYS credit

    ·         If you are itemizing; documentation of out-of-pocket expenses for:

         • Medical bills

         • Charitable contributions

         • Mortgage interest and points

         • Real estate taxes

         • Job-related expenses

         • Job-hunting expenses


    Any other information you think you might need to prepare your return(s) successfully


    As you go through the steps, the software will inform you of any other forms that are needed.
